What makes a blogger a blogger?
Continuing my series of blogger interviews, here’s Jacqui from One Messy Mama.
1. Tell me about yourself and your blog?
I’m Jacqui Bester. Wife to an amazing husband and mother of 4 wonderful children, aged 7; 6; 4 and 2. Pregnant with our 5th (long story) That’s ME… CHAOS! We emigrated from South Africa to the USA and after teaching for 15 years I was finally able to put down my red pen and stay at home with my kids (a life long dream). I had read so many blog posts on becoming a stay at home mom, the mere thought of it had me hearing songs of angels. I had dreamed up this romantic notion of perfection!
FAST FORWARD… There were no angels singing…
It is hard and exhausting, and sometimes it takes all the will power you have, to get out of bed in the morning. But through all the tiresome and sometimes mundane activities, when that little one kisses you goodnight and says “I Love You Mommy”, filling every fibre of your being with unspeakable love, that’s when you know you are going to be alright. That you are doing the best you can.
I grew tired of reading all these blogs about the baking mom and the soccer mom, where everything is always sunshine and roses… And I decided to be an honest mom albeit sometimes messy!
2. How long have you been blogging for?
3. What led you to start your blog?
I became a SAHM 2 years ago, and needed something to keep me sane. No – I’m kidding… I have always enjoyed writing and finally had the opportunity to put more time into it!
4. What is your motivation to keep going?
Well. Firstly, I enjoy it! Secondly, I decided a while ago that I wasn’t going to force myself to post everyday. That takes away the love of blogging. I don’t need or want to be rich and famous so I am going to use my blog to connect, share and inspire others instead of chasing “Hollywood” (for lack of a better word).
5. How much time do you spend blogging?
On average about 2 to 3 hours a day. That includes Social Media posts and commenting.
I guess I probably work about 25 hours a week on my blog. I’ve never worked it out before. Is that a lot or pretty normal? You’ve got me thinking now!
6. What works best for you to drive more traffic to your blog?
The linky #globalblogging has helped a lot, however, it’s not about traffic for me. I have a handful of readers that keep coming back, and that is more important to me.
7. What is your favourite tool or plugin?
I would say the TOP 10 plugin. It allows me to see what posts have done well and what people have enjoyed reading.
8. How do you promote your posts?
I promote through using linkies and social media. Facebook gets many of my friends and family reading.
9. What is your best tip for fitting blogging in around work or home commitments?
I’m not sure I am the best person to answer this question. I don’t follow a schedule. I plan the night before. Knowing what my day will look like, I fit my blogging time around my priorities! Mostly when my kids are napping though.
10. What do you do in your spare time?
Spare time? Haha. I don’t really give myself spare time. I say it that way because I am sure I have spare time but I obviously don’t use it the way I should. I probably blog or lie in a hot tub with a book and a glass of wine.
11. What was the first CD you ever bought?
Wow, this feels like yonks ago. I would have to say Cat Stevens or No Doubt… I can’t actually remember… I hope that doesn’t make me sound old…
12. What was the last thing you watched on TV?
13. What’s your most embarrassing memory?
Oh I’m not going there 🙂
14. Who is your favourite celebrity?
Colin Farrell – who doesn’t like that Irish accent …
15. Cats or dogs?
Thank you Jacqui for sharing a little bit about yourself. Your life sounds really hectic, but crammed with a lot of fun. I especially liked the idea of soaking in a hot tub with wine!
