Get rid of head lice effectively – Q&A with KIT & COCO

Get rid of head lice effectively – Q&A with KIT & COCO

Do you remember when head lice were rife around your school class?

The queue for the ‘nit nurse’? The conversation between your teacher and parents at collection time? And that dreaded bottle of what seemed like acid you’d be washing your hair in when you got home.

Yep…

Schools + Nurseries = Lice

Having not had nits for probably 20 years, I’d kind of forgotten about it.

One thing you never forget though is what your Mum always told you…

They only like clean hair

As if that was some kind of consolation as she bathed your head in that acid stuff whilst your eyes felt like they were falling out.

But as Lady P approaches 2 years old and seems to come home from nursery with all manner of coughs, colds and germs though, I guess it’s only a matter of time before we’d be having that conversation.

So when KIT & COCO head lice hair care got in touch with me to take a look at their products, I figured I have better swot up and ask them a few questions…

A Q&A with KIT & COCO head lice hair care

I was lucky enough to have exclusive access to Jamie Webb, founder of KIT & COCO, so here’s how our chat went…

Tips for parents

Was my Mum being kind when she said they are attracted to clean hair?

Your Mum was right! Lice do prefer cleaner heads over less clean but will take what they can get. They also prefer long hair so girls tend to be more affected than boys by default. Lice are opportunistic, longer hair makes it easier for them to transfer from head to head and provides insulation closer to the scalp where they like to lay their eggs.

What are the tell-tale signs that your child has head lice?

Many people with head lice have little to no symptoms for the first infestation. The first signs people tend to notice is itching, particularly behind the ears and around the nape of the neck where the lice prefer to lay the eggs.

What are your top 3 tips for dealing with head lice?

It’s no secret that head lice are no fun which is why we have some top KIT & COCO tips to help families deal with the situation quickly and efficiently to rid your little ones of the little critters fast and ensure happy hair.

  1. Keep Calm – Head lice and nits can be stressful for everyone involved. As a parent, the best thing you can do is keep your cool and take the necessary next steps to deal with the situation. Sometimes it’s worth giving your little one a reward for being so brave (and staying still whilst you’ve applied the treatment!) so we’ve included a little extra treat in the KIT & COCO complete treatment kit which tends to do the trick
  1. Identify the Critters – Although itching is the first symptom, only 30% of children are aware of an infestation so it’s worth carrying out a full hair inspection under good lighting on a regular basis.  Nits (the eggs) and head lice especially, like the nape of the neck and behind the ears as these are the warmest parts of the head.  Nits are easier to spot than lice, which are speedy little critters and the best way to make a correct diagnosis is to use a nit comb such as KIT & COCO’s ultra-efficient fine toothed comb.
  1. Deal with them quickly – Lice can produce around 10 eggs a day which take around seven days to hatch so one small problem can escalate into a larger issue very quickly! You need to tackle it quickly.  Our KIT & COCO complete treatment kit includes everything you need to combat head lice and nits from treatment shampoo to a gentle ergonomic nit comb, applicator brush, protective shower cap as well as surprise treat for little ones!

What is the etiquette regarding telling parents of your children’s friends that there has been an outbreak?

Head lice is to be expected from kids socialising in close contact so parents shouldn’t be embarrassed at the news that their child has been affected by head lice. I would certainly want to know; check my kids and treat an infestation ASAP or break out the KIT & COCO protectives to ensure they can avoid infestation all together. Then pass on the same advice! If you are already using KIT & COCO Protective range, you can afford to be a little smug!

Is there still such a thing as a ‘nit nurse’?

KIT & COCO’S treatment and protection kits make it really easy to check for lice and eggs at home as the specially designed fine toothed comb makes it very easy to spot and remove eggs and lice from the scalp alongside the KIT & COCO treatment shampoo. So even without the aid of nit nurses in schools, KIT & COCO’s natural formulae and accessories are proven to be efficient, gentle and fun, all from the comfort of your own home.

About KIT & COCO

Who are KIT & COCO?

KIT & COCO are two fun and loveable characters who offer children a friendly approach (and helpful hands) to make them feel more comfortable in dealing with the horrid situation of lice and nits.  They’re dedicated to making happy hair which in turn leads to happy children, and add fun and reduce the stigma associated with head lice.

What products do you make and who are they aimed at?

We offer a selection of fun and effective plant based products for the prevention and treatment of head lice & nits (eggs). Our products are unique in that the entire range has been carefully designed with little ones in mind; right from the lovable KIT & COCO characters, to the stylish accessories designed for boys and girls and the little surprise ‘treat’ to be found in treatment kits.

Can you tell me a little about how the company started and what the inspiration was?

KIT & COCO was inspired by a growing gap in the market for an effective, plant-based head lice treatment. Whilst other brands on the market are indeed effective, very few are natural or gentle on heads and/or the environment. KIT & COCO strive to be both 100% effective whilst also caring for you and the environment.

Why head lice?

Being affected by head lice and nits is a horrible situation for every parent. As a parent myself, I wanted to bring something to the market which offers an easy and gentle, yet effective solution which gets rid of the critters fast.  When developing a product which is aimed at kids, it’s important to keep them front of mind, which is what we’ve always tried to do with KIT & COCO.

How are your products different to shop-bought remedies?

kit and coco HEAD LICE & EGGS COMPLETE TREATMENTWe’ve worked in tandem with some of the most respected scientists and independent lice experts in this very specific field, to ensure that our products deliver results.  From the start, our researchers have been dedicated to using plant based active ingredients to get rid of head lice and nits.

The way which KIT & COCO products work is by clogging the respiratory system of lice and nits (eggs) and asphyxiating them.  In recent years, there have been several scientific studies published on the increased resistance lice have to chemicals. Due to genetic mutations, lice have found a way to survive treatments that are insecticide-based. This is why our KIT & COCO experts have developed an effective formulae based on coconut oil. It’s nature vs nature!

Which of your products is your favourite right now and why?
The KIT & COCO complete treatment kit really does what it says on the box, we know that parents just want to deal with head lice quickly so we’ve put it all in one place. From the treatment shampoo, to the handy comb, we’ve also included a little shower cap and an extra surprise so your little ones are free to play whilst the treatment shampoo gets to work on the head lice.

Do they make your eyes sting like the solutions I remember?

We’re dedicated to using plant based ingredients to keep our products as gentle as possible for sensitive little heads. If you follow the product directions, there will be no stinging to eyes.

Yay!

About you, Jamie…

What does a typical day for you look like?

A vast amount of time is spent maintaining how we sell KIT & COCO online. The KIT & COCO website is constantly evolving to support growing demand and likewise, customers on Amazon, Facebook and general customer enquiries require fast service and succinct responses.

As often as time permits, we are out in the field visiting pharmacies and stockists to introduce them to KIT & COCO and offer them ongoing training.

What is your best-selling product and why do you think that is?

While the old saying “prevention is better than cure” is especially prevalent when it comes to head lice, this is something that consumers (including myself) tend to leave to chance, but are shocked when their children come home with the inevitable nasties and have to treat an infestation. Our shampoo and complete treatment kits are certainly more in demand, but we have recently seen a spike in the protectives sales so it seems parents are becoming more aware of the need to protect little heads.

Where can people buy the KIT & COCO remedies?

Our KIT & COCO products are available in a variety of independent stockists, to find one near you please visit store locator, on the website and via Amazon.

I am so worried about my son getting lice from daycare! I’m part African so he has very curly hair! I think we would just have to cut all his hair off because he wouldn’t sit still long enough for us to use the treatment!! #TwinklyTuesday

We had nits for months with Eva, they just wouldn’t go! The only thing that worked was the nitty gritty comb, we tried everything before that point though! Even had prescribed shampoos from the doctors! It was awful, I still itch when I think about it! #dreamteam
